What is a mattress run? Costs, risks & alternatives
Updated
A mattress run is a hotel stay booked mainly to earn elite qualifying nights or points, not because you need the room. Travelers do it near the end of the year to reach or keep a status tier such as Marriott Platinum, Hilton Diamond or Hyatt Globalist. It works, but it costs real money per night, so status challenges and night credits are often a cheaper way to the same tier.
Why people do mattress runs
Hotel elite tiers are earned by nights per calendar year: 50 for Marriott Platinum, 60 for Hyatt Globalist, 70 for IHG Diamond, and under Hilton's 2026 rules 50 for Diamond. Someone who ends the year a few nights short can lose a year of upgrades, lounge access and free breakfast, so a handful of cheap nights can be worth more than they cost.
Classic mattress runs book the cheapest eligible property, often for one night at a time to maximise stay counts, and sometimes never sleep in the room.
What a mattress run really costs
Even at budget brands, a qualifying night typically costs $80–$150 including taxes, so closing a 10-night gap can cost $800–$1,500, plus travel time. Cheaper nights may not qualify: award stays, third-party bookings and some rate types are excluded by some programs.
How hotel programs treat them
Programs set their own rules. Paid stays where you check in normally count. Stays booked purely to generate nights, without the guest staying, can fall outside program terms, and programs can review or reverse nights and status they consider improper. Read the terms of your program before relying on any shortcut.
Faster alternatives
Status challenges give you the tier immediately for a trial window (usually 90–120 days) and let you keep it by completing a smaller number of paid nights, for example 8 nights instead of 50.
Instant status packages place the tier on your account for a fixed term with no stays required.
Elite night credits add qualifying nights to your account, which can close the gap to the next tier or finish a challenge.
FAQ
- Is a mattress run worth it?
- Only when the status you keep is worth more to you than the nights cost. For a gap of more than a few nights, a status challenge or night credits is usually cheaper.
- Do I have to stay in the room?
- Program rules expect a real guest stay. Booking nights without staying can fall outside program terms.
- When is the best time for a mattress run?
- October to December, once you know how many nights you are short for the year.
