Instant status vs. status challenge: which to buy?

Updated

Choose instant status if you want a tier for a fixed term with no stays required, for example IHG Diamond through December 31, 2027 or Hyatt Globalist through February 28, 2028. Choose a status challenge if you will stay a handful of paid nights anyway: you get the tier immediately for a trial window and keep it by completing those nights, usually for much less money.

How each one works

Instant status: the tier is added to your existing account for the stated term. Nothing else is required.

Status challenge: the tier is added for a trial window (90 days for Hyatt, 120 days for Hilton, through February 2027 for Marriott). Complete the listed paid nights inside the window and the tier is kept for the full term.

Night requirements at a glance

Marriott: 8 paid nights to keep Platinum through February 2028.

Hilton: 8 nights to keep Gold, or 12 nights to keep Diamond, through March 2028.

Hyatt: 10 nights to keep Explorist, or 20 nights to keep Globalist, through February 28, 2028.

IHG: instant status only, through December 31, 2027.

A simple rule

If you already have trips planned that cover the challenge nights, the challenge is the better value. If not, instant status avoids paying for nights you don't need. Night credits can bridge a small gap in either case.

FAQ

Can I combine a challenge with night credits?
Night credits add qualifying nights to your account, which can help reach the next tier. Check the challenge terms, since some challenges count only paid stays.
Which is faster?
Both are delivered in 1–3 business days. The challenge then needs the listed nights completed within its window.
