What are elite night credits? How they work at Marriott, Hyatt, IHG and Hilton
Updated
Elite night credits are a count of qualifying nights toward hotel elite status, not a currency: you can't spend them on rooms or transfer them. Programs give them for paid and some award stays, co-branded credit cards, large meetings and promotions. They decide your tier (for example 50 for Marriott Platinum), while points pay for free nights.
Night credits vs. points
Points are what you redeem for free nights. Elite night credits only count toward your tier for the year. A paid stay earns both; a credit card's annual night credits add to your count without any stay; a points promotion adds points but no nights.
Names differ: Marriott calls them elite night credits, Hyatt tier-qualifying nights, IHG qualifying nights. Hilton counts nights, stays or spend, and its credit cards grant status rather than nights.
Where night credits come from
Stays: paid stays booked directly earn them; Marriott and IHG also count award stays; bookings through online travel agencies usually don't.
Credit cards: for example 15–25 a year on Marriott cards, 5 plus spend bonuses on Hyatt's card, and 5–15 on IHG's cards.
Meetings and events: Marriott gives 1 elite night credit per 20 room nights booked for an event, up to a cap.
Promotions and choice benefits: Marriott's Annual Choice Benefit at 50 nights can be 5 elite night credits, and Marriott occasionally runs bonus-night promotions.
What night credits don't do
They don't count toward status challenges, which require paid nights you actually stay. They don't expire into anything: they reset each calendar year (IHG lets Gold members and above roll extras into next year's status count). At Marriott, credit card night credits do count toward lifetime status.
Buying night credits vs. a mattress run
A mattress run means paying for real nights you don't need, often $80–$150 each plus travel, just to raise your count. Buying elite night credits adds the nights to your account directly, usually for less per night, and they're posted around the stays you've told us you've booked so they don't clash. They're best for closing a gap of a few to a couple of dozen nights to the next tier.
